Next Week on Mad Men
Last night's episode of Mad Men did not disappoint. In fact, it was quite delicious. I believe it was a major metaphoric moment for Don Draper when the horseshoe on his award turned upside down as I am guessing his good luck is about to do the same. And was it just me, or did anyone else think he was packing heat in his briefcase when he went to see Adam? This preview for next week's episode is delightfully subversive.
Speaking of subversion, but on more ghetto level, for some reason I've been watching Rock of Love with Bret Michaels on VH1 this summer. Anyone else doing the same? Or what about HGTV's Design Star? Design Star is surely less trashy than Rock of Love, and last year's winner is doing well (his show was renewed). I'm invested in both until the end. I tuned into that Scott Baio show a couple times, too, but it was actually worse than expected.

yes, yes, yes!
I've been dying to talk about the episode. So glad you posted about it.
First off; yes, I did think Don had a gun in his bag. Thank God it was just money! His poor brother doesn't know what to think.
Ok, can we agree on these basic facts: (1) we don't know who Don's mother was, but it wasn't the same as Adam's - but I guess they shared a father. (2) there is quite an age difference between the two (3) Don recreated himself after serving in WW2 (4) Don's name was Dick as in Richard but was his last name the same as Adam's? (5) Remember the guy on the train who called him Rick or Dick and said he knew him in the army? So that was another person who knew him BEFORE the big makeover (6)His wife and co-workers have no idea he is a self-made man (7) Don says he doesn't like how his wife's dad looks at him - could his father-in-law have some suspicions about Don?
Ok, its so wonderfully delicious!

Items (1) and (2) Not sure I agree they shared a father. Remember when they were discussing "them," Adam said "Uncle so-and-so" was pretty broken up when "she" died. I agree there is an age difference, but I can't tell if Adam and Don/Dick are full brothers raised by an aunt and uncle or half brothers or what? (3) It seems he changed ID during the war, yes, but it might have been the Korean War. There's some discussion on IMDB message boards about that. (4) Same last name - Whitman. (5) The guy on the train called him Dick and Richard. I think that Don and Dick served together, the real Don Draper somehow perished (and I'm better the manner in which he did so turns into an important plot point), and Dick subsequently took on Drapers ID. (6) Agree. (7) GMTA! I wonder if Betty's father is military and Don/Dick did something unsavory while in the service, tied up with the ID change? Maybe Dick let the real Don die when he could have saved him, something like that?
I wonder if Draper had a more privileged upbringing than poor Dick Whitman. It seems that the guys at the agency are all "manor born," as it were. I think it was harder to break class barriers in those days. Poor kids didn't go to college (university, as you say) and wouldn't have a chance at breaking into a corporate career. Adam after all is a janitor. I'm thinking the guys in the agency wouldn't revere Don if they knew his real origins.
I have to admit, though I hate reality TV, I feel drawn to the Coreys about Haim and Feldman, if only just to laugh at how pathetic they both are now.
I finally watched this last night. I DID think he was packing heat, especially when he asked the kid, "So, you're the only one left in the family then? Everyone else is dead?" All he had to do was kill Adam, and his problems would all be gone. Classic misdirect. I love this show!
I must say I am very curious about Mad Men. Unfortunately, I have yet to catch it. Hopefully they'll have a mini-marathon down the road.
